Project Healing Waters – The Canadian Adventure

All of us at Wilderness North join the National Capital Chapter of Trout Unlimited and The Mid-Atlantic Council Federation of Fly Fishers in saluting the brave men and women of the U.S. and Canadian armed forces, and strive to serve those who have come home wounded and to aid in their physical and emotional recovery by introducing or rebuilding the skills of conventional spin casting or fly fishing and fly tying.

To that end, we at Wilderness North, have dedicated July 12-20, Project Healing Waters week at our Miminiska Lodge, our full service American Plan destination along the Albany River in Northwestern Ontario. We will be flying in those soldiers who have fought in both Afghanistan and Iraq, but have fallen into harms way and returned from the battlefield to recover from serious wounds, often including a missing limb or limbs.

When Mark Snyder, who has guided in our remote waters, called to tell us about Project Healing Waters, we asked, "What can we do?" And from that call we realized that our access to the wilderness and our facility and staff within this remote and remarkable place would be an ideal adventure to enhance the healing process.

Individuals and organizations have now asked us, "What can we do?" And here's a way to join in the project. To date, invitations have gone out to soldiers from Hickory, NC, - Green Bay, WI - Eugene OR - Roanoke, VA – and Dover, DE. That is to say, these heroes have progressed along in their rehab, to a point where such a trip would not be TOO much for them to endure. Men and women, from both sides of the border, are eligible to participate.

Our immediate need is money to pay for each soldier's transportation to and from Thunder Bay and to equip him or her with fishing tackle. It should be noted that many manufacturers are giving or providing equipment at cost, so our biggest financial hurdle is the transportation.

You and your group may or call us at 888-465-3474.

Krista Cheeseman will be coordinating the project and the fund drive. A goal of $15,000 USD has been determined, and progress reports will be included in our regular e-newsletter and podcast.
